BTCC Saturday: Home hero Dan Cammish charges to Croft pole position

29 Jul 23

Dan Cammish will start the first of Sunday’s three Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship races at Croft Circuit from pole position after producing a superlative lap in qualifying this afternoon.

Kicking off the second half of the 2023 season at the British Automobile Racing Club venue, the Yorkshireman led a NAPA Racing UK 1-2-3 with Dan Rowbottom and Ash Sutton completing the top three of what was an ultra-competitive session.

Rowbottom was the first of the front-runners to lay down a marker before both Jake Hill and Josh Cook came to the fore to stake their own claims. Sutton then upped the ante with a scintillating lap which then seemed to only inspire his Ford stablemates.

Underlining the prowess of the front-wheel-drive machine, Rowbottom returned to the summit before immediately being pushed back to second by Cammish, who punched in a sensational lap to clinch pole position.

Cook ultimately settled for fourth with Team BMW’s Colin Turkington pipping his West Surrey Racing stablemate Hill late on to round out the top six.

Reigning champion Ingram had languished down the order for a majority of the session but bounced back to clinch seventh with Aron Taylor-Smith, Stephen Jelley and Aiden Moffat rounding out the top ten.

“I’ve never felt so naked in all my life! To sit there knowing you’ve got provisional pole and watching almost every car driving out behind you – I actually asked my team boss to just come and talk to me and take my mind off it,” said Cammish.

“I knew that I didn’t have anything to improve with, and there wasn’t going to be a better lap in this car today, so you just got to sit there and hope that you have shot your shot at the right moment.

“This means the world to me – I wanted to come back after the break period and come out swinging. A one, two, three is also an amazing feat for NAPA Racing UK and such a testament to all these guys celebrating in the background. It feels absolutely incredible!”

It wasn’t just the BTCC that had fans on the edge of their seats however as the four blockbuster championships on the TOCA support bill shared the limelight around the 2.12-mile layout.

The ROKiT F4 British Championship certified by FIA - which is home to potential future Formula 1 stars and which this week announced it will remain on the TOCA package until the end of 2026 - saw Louis Sharp and Sonny Smith share the spoils.

Bumper-to-bumper entertainment was a constant theme in Round 3 of the Legends Cars Elite Cup with JLM, which saw Marcus Pett, Jack Parker and Will Gibson all triumph. Elsewhere, Tom Ovenden charged to victory in the opening Vertu Motors MINI CHALLENGE Trophy bout.

Rounding out the day was a pulsating contest from the Porsche Sprint Challenge Great Britain, which saw Team Parker Racing’s Joseph Warhurst triumph ahead of Matthew Armstrong and local star Max Coates.

The Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship returns tomorrow (Sunday 30th July) to headline what promises be an action-packed day of racing with three races, whilst there will also be a further seven contests from the action-packed TOCA support package.

As always, fans will have an opportunity to meet the stars of the BTCC during the traditional Pit Lane Autograph Session, which is scheduled to begin at 10:30.

Gates open at 08:00 on race day with adult tickets available to purchase on arrival. For more information, visit https://www.croftcircuit.co.uk/racing/btcc.
